We Honor Veterans Partnership

Veterans carry stories of courage, sacrifice, and service that shape every part of their lives, including how they experience serious illness. Anvoi Health’s We Honor Veterans hospice program exists to recognize that service in a tangible way, while providing specialized hospice care for veterans and their families across New Mexico, Louisiana, Mississippi, and the Gulf Coast.

Anvoi participates in the national We Honor Veterans hospice initiative and integrates its standards into everyday practice. This commitment means that when a veteran chooses Anvoi, the care team understands military culture, recognizes service-related conditions, and knows how to walk alongside both the veteran and the family during a very personal chapter of life.

What Is the We Honor Veterans Hospice Program?

The We Honor Veterans hospice program is a national initiative created to improve end-of-life care for those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Hospices that participate commit to ongoing education, quality standards, and community outreach focused specifically on veterans.

At Anvoi, participation in the We Honor Veterans hospice program is more than a badge. It shapes how teams are trained, how care plans are built, and how each veteran’s history is thoughtfully integrated into care.

What to Expect:

Military History Awareness

Training staff to identify military history, service era, and branch.

Understanding Service-Related Experiences

Recognizing how combat, deployments, and military culture influence symptoms and emotional needs.

Respectful Recognition of Service

Providing respectful recognition of service that matches the veteran’s comfort level.

This structure gives veterans and their loved ones reassurance that the hospice team will understand the unique experiences that come with end-of-life care for veterans.

Why Veterans Need Specialized Hospice Care

Veterans often face emotional challenges that are very different from the general population. Experiences in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, the Gulf War, and earlier conflicts can echo decades later in ways that affect how a veteran feels physically, emotionally, and spiritually at the end of life.

  • Service-related issues that may influence hospice care include:
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder tied to past military experience.
  • Moral injury, survivor guilt, or unresolved memories that surface as health declines.

A veteran hospice program must address these issues carefully and respectfully. Anvoi’s teams learn how to recognize triggers that may worsen anxiety or flashbacks, how to explain procedures in ways that feel safe, and how to create an environment that supports dignity rather than re-creating trauma.

Recognition and Meaningful Moments

Anvoi’s We Honor Veterans hospice program makes a special effort to recognize service in ways that many families find deeply meaningful. These gestures may include honoring the veteran with a certificate or pinning ceremony, providing branch-specific flags or symbols at the bedside, educating staff and volunteers to address veterans respectfully by branch or rank, or observing moments of silence or reflection that acknowledge the veteran’s service and sacrifice.

These recognition activities are always offered, never imposed. Some veterans appreciate a quiet, private acknowledgment, while others welcome a more public moment shared with family.

Emotional and Spiritual Support

For many veterans, end-of-life conversations bring up questions of meaning, regret, duty, and faith. Anvoi’s interdisciplinary team includes social workers and chaplains who are trained to support these conversations in ways that respect military culture.

They may help veterans process memories that still feel heavy or unresolved, support families who are hearing stories about service for the first time, or coordinate with community clergy, military chaplains, or peer support when requested.

This support is not about forcing a veteran to “tell their story” if they do not wish to. It centers on giving the veteran space to be heard, respected, and understood in whatever way feels right to them.

Coordinating Care with VA Medical Centers

Many families have questions about how hospice care works alongside VA benefits or existing medical teams. Anvoi helps clarify what is covered, how hospice services coordinate with current support systems, and what additional resources may be available. While we are not part of the VA system, our team is experienced in navigating veteran-specific benefit structures and can communicate with VA clinicians or social workers, with permission, to help keep care aligned and organized. This approach reduces confusion and ensures veterans receive seamless, well-coordinated support.

Bereavement and Grief Support

Grief support is important for families of veterans, as military service often shapes identity in profound ways. After a loss, spouses and adult children may carry unique forms of grief tied to service memories, sacrifice, or complicated emotional history. Anvoi provides continued support through bereavement services that honor both the person and their service, offering families space to process, reflect, and heal.
